An Eclectic Vision, done with Precision and care

The Walden Dr. Addition was all three.

This was one of more than eight projects our team completed for this remarkable homeowner across two homes over the years. She loved the remodeling process as much as we do, and had an extraordinary gift for envisioning the finished product long before construction began. Her ideas were bold, detailed, and deeply personal. Bringing them to life was both a challenge and a privilege.

From the outset, the homeowner had a strong point of view. She envisioned a space that reflected her eclectic taste while delivering exceptional comfort throughout the seasons. Her priorities included:

• Designing a bold, personality-driven addition that blended seamlessly with the rest of the home
• Introducing expansive windows and skylights to flood the interior with daylight
• Maintaining consistent warmth during colder months, despite the room’s large glass footprint and crawlspace foundation
• Carrying her established aesthetic into every finish and architectural detail
• Adding a powder room after initial approvals were complete
• Selecting premium materials that aligned with her vision, even if it increased the overall investment

More than anything, she wanted the finished environment to feel distinctive in style yet thoughtfully engineered behind the scenes.

Project Overview 

Completed in just three and a half months, the Walden Dr. Addition transformed an existing home in West Caldwell into a striking, light-filled retreat. What began as a straightforward expansion evolved into a highly detailed living space layered with custom finishes, advanced comfort systems, and thoughtful architectural integration.

This project held special meaning for our team. As mentioned previously, we partnered with this homeowner on more than eight renovations across two properties. She approached every project with enthusiasm and a rare ability to picture the final result with remarkable clarity. Collaborating with her was both creatively energizing and deeply rewarding.

Budget and Timeline

Construction began in early April 2025 and was completed within a three-and-a-half-month timeframe. Despite scope adjustments and expanded design elements, the project remained on schedule.

The homeowner initially established a target investment range. As product selections progressed, including high-end finishes such as Viola marble, custom plaster walls, Ipe decking, and upgraded heating systems, the overall cost increased beyond the original estimate.

We worked closely with her throughout the process to clarify how each selection affected the budget. For her, achieving the right materials and making sure the space aligned with her vision was the priority. Our role was to guide those decisions transparently so expectations matched with reality from start to finish.

Challenges & Solutions

As with many highly customized additions, this project evolved as design ideas were refined and new preferences emerged. Each adjustment required careful coordination, proactive planning, and clear communication to keep progress steady and preserve the integrity of the design.

Expanded Footprint & Stormwater Management

After plans were approved, the homeowner requested a powder room within the addition. Accommodating this required enlarging the structure. The expanded footprint triggered stormwater management requirements, which we addressed by installing a drywell in the backyard.

Groundwater Mitigation

Groundwater near the crawlspace required landscaping adjustments to redirect water away from the foundation and protect the structure long term.

Mechanical Relocation & Structural Coordination

• Two HVAC condensers and a generator were relocated to meet zoning regulations.
• A kitchen mini-split condensate line intersected the new footprint and required rerouting.
• Rear rooflines were reframed to integrate seamlessly with existing skylights.

Through each adjustment, our office and field teams evaluated options, anticipated implications, and made solutions efficiently, without disrupting the overall schedule.

Project Highlights

Every material, finish, and system was selected with care, balancing bold aesthetics with long-term comfort and performance. The homeowner’s love for distinctive, MacKenzie-Childs–styled design is evident throughout the space, where pattern, contrast, and artistic detail created visual delight at every turn.

Natural Light from Every Angle

Velux skylights, Andersen 400 Series windows, and an Andersen Frenchwood patio door introduce sunlight throughout the day, creating a bright and uplifting environment that feels connected to the outdoors.

Layered Comfort Systems

Because the addition featured a good deal of glazing, thermal performance was a major concern. To maintain consistent warmth and comfort, we incorporated:

• Closed-cell spray foam insulation in the floor and ceiling
• Schluter Ditra Heat membrane with electric radiant heat wire and programmable thermostat
• A 60" x 15" Fireplace Xtrordinair linear gas fireplace with blower
• A mini-split HVAC system for supplemental heating and cooling

These integrated systems made sure the space remained comfortable even during colder months.

Distinctive Finishes & Design Expression

The flooring design reflects the homeowner’s bold aesthetic:

• A 12" x 12" black-and-white tile border
• 24" x 24" white tile installed diagonally in the center

Custom picture-frame wainscoting, a painted accent wall, and coordinated railing details reinforce the eclectic character of the room. The layered patterns, high-contrast finishes, and decorative detailing echo the charm and drama often associated with MacKenzie-Childs–inspired interiors.

Outdoor Living Expansion

The addition extends seamlessly onto an Ipe deck featuring TimberTech black metal posts with cable railing, further amplifying the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Statement Powder Room

The newly incorporated powder room became a jewel-box feature within the addition, complete with:

• Viola polished marble countertop
• Venetian plaster wall finish

This space further showcases the homeowner’s fearless approach to design and appreciation for rich textures and statement materials.

A Person and home we remember fondly
